oday’s post is something fun for Christmas time. We like to get creative when we can and we came up with a song about chiropractic. This is based on the tune of “Jingle Bells” so when you read through think about that. Dr. Schuneman, DC and his wife worked together to come up with this. Announcing The Life Symmetry Chiropractic YouTube Channel

I have some exciting news here at Life Symmetry Chiropractic! I have started a YouTube channel! In the blog today I wanted to let you know a little about what I was thinking and hoping to do with our new YouTube channel and encourage you to check it out and please subscribe.

What Will Be on the YouTube Channel?

I am planning to use the YouTube channel as a place to share important health information in a video format. This would include talking about certain health topics and some how-to health tip videos with exercises or other things to do to help keep your back and you balanced and healthy. We have also acquired some short videos about chiropractic in general to help explain what chiropractic is and how it can help you, your family, and friends. I am also considering recording some of the various health talks that I have put together over the years. I hope to make the channel an important and beneficial source of health information that will help you balance body, mind, and soul!

The First Video: 250,000 Back Surgeries

As I mentioned about I recently got several videos that were put together to help people ‘Get To Know Chiropractic.’ The first video is up and will be embedded below. The subject of that video is back surgeries and I wanted to talk a little about this as well.

Did you know that hundreds of thousands of back surgeries are performed every year? Unfortunately, the majority of these are considered unnecessary and/or conservative treatments were not tried first. Surgery is a major medical procedure, especially back surgery. When you have surgery, there is no going back. Once it is done there is no undoing it.

Now there are definitely times when surgery is necessary, but it is done much too frequently. Surgery really should be a last resort after all other more conservative treatments have not been successful. If you are considering back surgery and have not tried chiropractic, you need to give our office a call. If you have tried chiropractic before without relief, I would invite you to give it another try with Life Symmetry Chiropractic. I have a different approach than many chiropractors and have had several patients tell me that they have gotten better relief and results than previous times they have tried chiropractic. Now I cannot guarantee you will get results, but I definitely give each patient my very best.

Can Chiropractic Help With …?

As a chiropractor in Colorado Springs for the last couple of years I get questions all the time about what chiropractic can help with. Often it is “Can chiropractic cure…?” or “Can chiropractic get rid of…?” So today I wanted to address in general what chiropractic can help with.

First off, I want to say that chiropractic is not a ‘cure’ for anything. Now that may sound surprising coming from a chiropractor, but let me explain what I mean. You see, chiropractic does not do any of the healing, that is the job of your amazing body. Your body does all the healing and any results that may come from being under regular chiropractic care are the result of your body being able to heal and function better. So in that sense I believe that chiropractic can help with just about any condition, but is not a cure for any of them. I hope that distinction makes sense.

So what are some of the things that I have seen improve in patients under chiropractic care? Well, my wife is an interesting case in that her Raynaud’s Syndrome has been much improved after starting chiropractic care. I have seen constipation or diarrhea improved. One thing that many people report is being able to sleep better. Also often people report that they do not get sick as often as they used to. Headaches are another thing that I have seen great improvements with. And of course back pain, neck pain, and pain in many other areas of the body.

Why Can Chiropractic Help

Do you find it difficult to believe that chiropractic could help you? Understanding what chiropractic adjustments do might explain a little more of why I believe chiropractic can help with so many different conditions. As a chiropractor I am looking for what we call ‘subluxation.’ A subluxation is when the bones of the spine (or other joints) are misaligned or not moving properly and causes irritation or interference with the normal function of the nerves. This is the basis of chiropractic and why it can have such a big impact on the overall health of the body.

So let me ask you a question: what do the nerves control? Think about it, what do the nerves do? They send and receive information between the body and the brain. There is not any function in the body that is not directly or indirectly controlled by the nerves. So what could go wrong if there was interference with the information sent through the nerves? I believe the answer truly is anything could go wrong when proper signals are not sent and received between the brain and the body.

As a chiropractor when I find these areas of subluxation, I use very specific adjustments to help restore proper motion and alignment to the bones of the spine. This helps remove that irritation or interference with the normal function of the nerves. Then the body is better able to do what it is designed to do and heal itself! If a subluxation could possibly cause any number of problems, then it stands to reason that helping correct the subluxation could help those problems caused by it. This is why I have seen so many people helped with so many different conditions over the years.

Conclusion

Now in closing I want to make sure that you understand that not everything gets ‘magically’ better under chiropractic care. Again, it is the body that does the healing and there are a number of factors that contribute to the health of the body. These include things like nutrition, proper rest and exercise, and effectively managing stress just to name a few. And to be honest, there are limitations of time and matter. What I mean is that if you have had problems for years and years there may ultimately be changes to the body that will not be able to be undone, or if they can be reversed, it would likely take years as well. However, even in these situations I believe chiropractic helps, even if it does not get the results that may be hoped or expected. A body free of subluxation is always better!

What Is Sciatica?

Recently I have heard a lot of people talking about their “sciatica.” Occasionally it is pain that likely has little to do with sciatica. Today I wanted to talk a little about what sciatica is and how chiropractic can help.

So first off, what is sciatica? In the Medline Plus Dictionary online we find this under the entry for sciatica: “pain along the course of a sciatic nerve especially in the back of the thigh caused by compression, inflammation, or reflex mechanisms.” So sciatica really is not a disease in itself but is a description of a pain pattern. That pain pattern is pain along the course of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body. It is made up of nerve fibers coming from the spinal cord that exit the spinal canal in the low back and pelvis, more specifically L4-S3. These nerve fibers come together to form the sciatic nerve which passes between or sometimes through muscles is the buttocks, most notably the piriformis muscle. The sciatic nerve then passes down the back of the thigh and then separates into two main branches a little above the knee. These branches go on into the lower leg. The sciatic nerve or its branches supply muscles in the back of the thigh and lower leg as well as sensation in those areas as well.

What Causes Sciatica?

Again sciatica in and of itself is not a disease, but is a symptom of some underlying problem—compression or inflammation of the sciatic nerve. So what can cause compression or inflammation of the sciatic nerve? One of the most common causes of sciatica is compression of part of the sciatic nerve by a bulging or herniated disc. Some other possible causes of compression are bony spurs from spine degeneration, compression by spasming muscles, or even from a tumor or other unusual growth. Another problem that can contribute to sciatica is a spinal subluxation. A spinal subluxation is improper movement or alignment of the spine that results in nerve interference. If that interference is bad enough and causes enough inflammation, it can result in sciatica.

One other thing to know is that subluxation of the pelvis can also cause pain in the buttocks and down the back of the thigh. However, this is not technically sciatica because it is not due to irritation of the sciatic nerve but to the sacro-iliac joints in the pelvis. This is why being checked by a chiropractor is helpful to find the actual cause of the problem.

How Do You Treat Sciatica?

Well the treatment for sciatica would depend on the underlying cause of the problem. Often sciatica pain will subside by itself in a few weeks, but this does not do anything to address the underlying problem and it often will recur over time. Chiropractic is a great option for many causes of sciatica, including bulging or herniated discs. Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper movement and alignment to the spine which can alleviate compression on the sciatic nerve it can also help relax tight muscles in the area that can contribute to sciatica as well. And when the spine is aligned correctly it also takes extra stress on the spinal joints that can lead to inflammation, another possible cause of sciatica.

In fact a study done on patients with sciatica found that under chiropractic care the “period of sick leave among the patients was reduced by two thirds as compared with that associated with conventional medical treatment.”

Occasionally more aggressive treatments are needed to treat the underlying cause of sciatica. However, conservative treatments like chiropractic should be tried first.

More Thoughts On The Flu Shot

Well last week I wrote a blog “Thoughts on the Flu Shot” that gave some of my thoughts on the effectiveness of the flu shot. For being universally recommended, I really feel the research showing effectiveness is severely lacking. If you want more details on that go check it out.

This week I wanted to go on and talk a little more about my thoughts as to why the flu shot is so widely recommended if the evidence does not support it being very effective. And my personal conclusion is that it makes money. Now there are those that would argue and say that vaccine manufacturers do not make any money off of the flu vaccine. Here is an article in Yahoo’s finance section that basically says that. However, there is no evidence that the vaccine manufacturers don’t make money on the flu shot. All the article really says is that the flu shot does not sell for as much as other vaccines, which is true but does not mean they don’t make a profit from it. I would contend that the pharmaceutical companies are not interested on taking a loss on something like the flu shot. And besides just not taking a loss, that vaccines including the flu shot actually make them a lot of money.

Here are some other articles that paint a different picture. On CNBC this article states that in 2012, Sanofi Pasteur the “world’s biggest supplier of flu vaccines, generated flu jab sales of 884 million euros ($1.43 billion).” Now granted I do not know the cost of producing the flu vaccine but I imagine that there was probably some profit made at least that year with $1.43 billion in sales. Also from that article we find this:

Several pharmaceutical companies made a conscious decision to chase and develop the vaccines market towards the end of the last decade, as it became clear that the traditional blockbuster drug treatment model for the industry was changing. Vaccines were seen as promising from a business perspective because they could be applied to huge swathes of the population, and because the economic case for payment could be made to governments.

So taking an active role in developing a vaccine market does not sound like something you would do if it did not offer any profit. While I do not have the exact numbers of profit or loss, I feel confident that drug companies do not lose money on flu vaccines or at least not regularly if they ever do.

And as far as the regular doctor’s office, do they make any money off the flu shot? Well in this article we learn that at least one doctor, who happens to be a speaker for companies that make vaccines, seems to think that it is financially savvy for doctors to give flu shots: “Giving influenza vaccine is also good for the financial health of your practice.” He estimates that a doctor with 2,000 patients may expect to bring in from $25,000 to $42,500 due to business generated from giving flu shots. Now I don’t know if this would be the same in every practice, but making money is at least a reason that some doctors consider when giving the flu shot.

And here is one more article where someone crunched some numbers using average prices for vaccines and vaccinations rates and births in the US. The article basically looks at on average what sort of money is being made by pharmaceutical companies, doctor’s offices, and even the government from vaccinations. What they found using these averages is that including the well-baby checkup and administering vaccines that an average doctor’s office would make $3,032.87 on one child over their first five years of life. The pharmaceutical companies collectively can expect about $1,379.45 per child in their first five years of life. And finally the federal government getting excise tax from vaccines comes to $33.75 per child over the first five years of life. Now some of these numbers may not sound like much but when you consider that each year millions of children are born in the US and overall high vaccination rates and you are talking about some big money. Now this was just someone working with averages, but it does give you an idea what kind of money can be made on vaccinations.

In my mind there is ample reason to believe that vaccines are not simply produced because drug companies are simply concerned with our health. The main reason I am writing this is to give you an opportunity to hear ‘the other side of the story’ that is not commonly heard. I leave it to you to decide and make your own choices about vaccination.

Thoughts On The Flu Shot

This last week as I was driving to work, I noticed it again. They were everywhere. Every drugstore I passed had a sign telling you to get your flu shot. And to tell you the truth, it makes me roll my eyes. Now if you didn’t know, I am not real big on vaccinations in the first place, and the flu vaccine I feel is especially a waste of time and money. Today I wanted to share with you some of the research about the flu vaccines and some of the ‘statistics’ that are thrown around as to why you should get a flu vaccine.

To start with, why are you told to get a flu vaccine? Usually it is to prevent you from getting the flu and you could die from the flu. While it is true that you can die from the flu, what is the number that you usually hear on flu deaths? The official estimates by the CDC are actually a range from 3,000 to 49,000 for “seasonal influenza-associated deaths in the US.” These are some pretty significant numbers. How did they come up with that range? Well, this is the range for flu-associated deaths from the 1976-1977 to the 2006-2007 flu seasons. But you may be wondering what are influenza-associated deaths? You see often the flu is not really the direct cause of death but death occurs from a secondary infection that leads to pneumonia or other respiratory or circulatory problems because of the flu. So basically they use statistical models to estimate the number of influenza-associated deaths because the actual numbers are not really known. But one of the interesting things that is found on the CDC website is “about 90% of influenza associated deaths occur among adults 65 years and older.” So the elderly are the most at risk of dying from complications from influenza, which makes sense because they have the most circulatory and respiratory problems. But who is at the most risk for death and complications is an important fact to remember.

Now getting the flu is not fun, but I think the many people consider a flu shot because of the possibility of flu being fatal or leading to complications that can be fatal. So what does the research say about the effectiveness of the flu shot? In a Cochrane Review “Vaccines for preventing influenza in the elderly” there should be some good evidence to back up the universal recommendation to vaccinate the elderly. Well what they found is that there was only one randomized controlled trial “assessing efficacy and effectiveness. Although this seemed to show an effect against influenza symptoms it was underpowered to detect any effect on complications.” And the overall conclusion: “The available evidence is of poor quality and provides no guidance regarding the safety, efficacy or effectiveness of influenza vaccines for people aged 65 years or older.” So basically there is insufficient evidence to conclude that the flu vaccine helps prevent complications or even the flu for that matter in people 65 years and older!

So what about the effectiveness of the flu shot in other groups of people? Well the Cochrane Review “Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy adults” looked at studies assessing the flu vaccine in healthy adults. The review contains this nice little warning:

This review includes 15 out of 36 trials funded by industry (four had no funding declaration). An earlier systematic review of 274 influenza vaccine studies published up to 2007 found industry funded studies were published in more prestigious journals and cited more than other studies independently from methodological quality and size. Studies funded from public sources were significantly less likely to report conclusions favorable to the vaccines. The review showed that reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin but there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions and spurious notoriety of the studies. The content and conclusions of this review should be interpreted in light of this finding.

So in light of that what did they find? “[U]nder ideal conditions (vaccine completely matching circulating viral configuration) 33 healthy adults need to be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms.” So what about under non-ideal conditions? “In average conditions (partially matching vaccine) 100 people need to be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms.” They also found “Vaccine use did not affect the number of people hospitalised or working days lost but caused one case of Guillian-Barré syndrome (a major neurological condition leading to paralysis) for every one million vaccinations.”

To be completely fair, there was a reduction in flu symptoms in those vaccinated compared to those who were unvaccinated. When the vaccine matched the viral circulating strain and there was high circulation, “4% of unvaccinated people versus 1% of vaccinated people developed influenza symptoms,” but when there was poor matching of vaccine to flu strains the numbers were 2% of unvaccinated people versus 1% of vaccinated people developed influenza symptoms. But again those results need to be interpreted in light of the warning mentioned above. But if you are a healthy adult is having a 1-3% lower risk of getting flu symptoms and no difference in complications worth the shot? That is a question you need to answer for yourself.

In closing there is much more I could say on the subject and I may in another blog post. But I will say that there are other things besides getting a flu vaccination that will improve your odds of not getting the flu. They are common sense things like washing your hands, eating healthy, and getting adequate sleep. One other thing that may play a role is vitamin D. In a study done in school children vitamin D supplementation reduced the cases of flu compared to placebo. So before getting the flu shot consider what might be a more effective way to prevent the flu.

Chiropractic Is Not About ‘Fixing’ The Body Because You Are Not ‘Broken’

Today I wanted to talk a little about a reason I occasionally hear as to why people don’t go to the chiropractor or any other doctor for that matter. And to be honest, I hear of this more commonly among women than men, though I believe men have the same feelings as well but may not verbalize them. The reason basically comes down to that they don’t go because it makes them feel like something is wrong with them, that their body is ‘broken’ in some way. And if they don’t go to the doctor then everything must be okay. I would like to come at this subject from a couple of different directions.

First, I want to say that our bodies are amazing! They were designed marvelously and do what they are designed to do. When they get stressed, the body adapts to those stresses the best it can. If the stress is great enough, the body will alert you by experiencing symptoms of some sort so that you can make a change to your surroundings/situation. Symptoms are not the issue, but instead show that the body is experiencing a stress and is dealing with it. Often the symptom is the way the body handles the stress. For example, if you get a cold, you may have symptoms of a fever, runny nose and a cough. The fever helps the body increase its metabolic rate and inhibit the growth of many germs. The runny nose and cough are ways that the body clears wastes and helps ‘flush out’ the germs. So the body is not ‘broken’ but doing what it is designed to do and handling the stress. Now sometimes getting outside help enhances the body’s ability to process the stress. With a cold, getting advice about extra rest and getting plenty of fluids are ‘outside’ help to allow the body to function better.

As a chiropractor, I am not looking for how I can ‘fix’ the body, because the body does not need fixing. I am looking for ways that I can enhance the body to do what it does and that is heal itself. I personally think this is the biggest difference between chiropractic and other holistic approaches to health versus traditional medicine. Medicine seeks to take control over the body by stimulating or depressing certain functions of the body with drugs because it views the body as not able to properly regulate itself. Chiropractic and other holistic approaches seek to find what is stressing the body so much that it is interfering with what the body is designed to do and knows how to do. I am looking to work with the body, not against it.

The second thing I would like to touch on is optimizing health. Now health is not something that you have or you don’t. Health is a continuum with infinite levels or degrees of health. And in fact what many people would consider being ‘sick’ is really the body showing that it is appropriately handling a stress, which is a healthy thing. Health is more than just the absence of disease or symptoms: it is optimal physical, mental, and social well-being.

Now many, many professional athletes use chiropractic care on a regular basis. Do you think it is because they are unhealthy? Or that there is something wrong with them? Or they are ‘broken’? No, they use chiropractic regularly because they know it helps them to be their best and perform better. Most of us are not professional athletes, but chiropractic can help you function at your best whatever you are doing. I truly believe that regular chiropractic care, even when nothing is ‘wrong,’ is very important and will help you and me to function better than we would otherwise. This is the reason that I love checking and adjusting little children, again not because they are ‘broken’ and need fixing but to help them develop and grow their best!

So remember that your body is amazing and not ‘broken’ and chiropractic is a great way to help it express its full potential. So don’t let fear stop you from achieving better health each day. We look to forward to working with your body to help it continue to be amazing, the way it was meant to be.

What To Do With Those Pumpkin Seeds?

Well it may be a little late for this year if you have already carved your pumpkins and gotten rid of all the pumpkin ‘innards’. But if you are yet to carve your pumpkins this year, what do you do with all the pumpkin seeds that you take out of the inside? Well if you are like most people, you probably just throw them away. But there is a much better and healthy thing to do with them: you eat them!

Now if this seems weird or like a lot of work to you, don’t worry. It really isn’t difficult, and eating pumpkin seeds is not uncommon. In fact, you can get pumpkin seeds at most grocery stores though you may not recognize them because they might be labeled pepitas. Pepitas and pumpkin seeds are the same thing and have several health benefits.

Health Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds

Like most seeds and nuts, pumpkins seeds have omega-3 fats, which are often called ‘healthy fats’. Now there are several different fats that the body needs that it cannot make and all of those could be termed ‘healthy’. But those essential fats should be in proper proportions to each other, which is why omega-3 fats are important since most Americans are not getting enough omega-3 fats.

Pumpkin seeds are also a great source of magnesium. Magnesium is used as a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes. It is especially important in enzymes that use ATP, or basically the energy source used for most chemical reactions within the body. Magnesium also plays an important role in proper neuromuscular function. Unfortunately most Americans are not getting enough magnesium.

How to Prepare Pumpkin Seeds

So after you get all those pumpkin seeds out of the pumpkin what do you do next? Well if you really wanted to you could eat them raw. There are definitely some nutrients that are preserved in the raw seeds, but I prefer to roast them. Following is a recipe that my family came across a while ago but unfortunately we cannot remember where we found it originally. We have used it and think it makes the pumpkin seeds into a yummy treat.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

  • Wash pumpkin seeds (you don’t let them dry after you wash them)
  • Measure out pumpkin seeds by the half cup into a pot
  • For every 1/2 cup of seeds, add 2 cups of water and 1 T of salt
  • Bring to a boil then simmer for 10 minutes
  • Remove from heat and drain
  • Toss with olive oil
  • Bake at 400F for 5-20 minutes or until seed begin to brown
  • Cool completely before eating

1 Easy Exercise To Help Relieve Tension Between The Shoulders

As a chiropractor in Colorado Springs I see it all the time—tension and achy pains between the shoulders. This most frequently comes from spending too much time sitting in front of a computer or other electronic device. This is all too common for the majority of people out there, whether for work or in their free-time. Here is one easy exercise, which when done consistently can make a huge difference in that discomfort you feel.

This easy exercise is called a posture break. And it really is what it sounds like—it gives your body a break from that posture you tend to get into when sitting at the computer. But before I explain how to do the posture break, let’s talk a little about the posture we are taking a break from.

Poor Computer Posture

When we sit in front of a computer we all have a tendency to get into a typical posture. Even with the best ergonomic set up—though it does help—if we are at the computer too long we tend to fall into this posture. This includes the head coming forward so it is no longer over the shoulders, the shoulders round forward, and we hunch over in the mid to upper back. I know because even as a chiropractor if I am not careful I fall into the same habit.

So knowing what the typical posture is that contributes to that pain between the shoulders will help you understand why the posture break helps. When we get into the posture described above, what does that do to the body? As the head comes forward, it increases the stress on the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back. Also the muscles of the neck need to work overtime to hold your head up and many of these muscles attach in the upper back between the shoulders. When the arms are brought forward to work in front of your body, the shoulders round forward this stresses and pulls on the muscles of the shoulders, especially between the shoulder blades. Now can you see why you might have pain and tightness between the shoulders?

Posture Break

Okay so finally how do you do a posture break? It really is quite simple. Just follow these steps:

  • Sit or stand upright with feet shoulder width apart keeping the natural curve in the low back
  • Elbows are bent to 90 degrees and brought in close to the side with the palms of the hands facing each other with the fingers spread apart
  • The head is brought back a little over the shoulders and the chin is tucked slightly
  • The arms are moved outward by rotating at the shoulder, keeping the elbows by the side and then squeeze the shoulder blades together and hold 8-10 seconds
  • Return the arms to their starting position and repeat a couple of times

I recommend doing a posture break every 20-30 minutes when working at a computer. This gives the body a chance to basically ‘reset’ your posture and gives those muscles that are constantly being stressed a break. This often makes an enormous difference in the pain and discomfort that you feel.

If you are experiencing pain and tightness in this area and this exercise doesn’t seem to help much, it would be a good idea to have the problem checked out by a chiropractor. There are a number of other factors that may be present that could contribute to your tension and discomfort and why the posture break doesn’t seem to help much.
