Live A Life Without Pain Through Chiropractic Treatment

Life Without Pain

Every year, more and more people live highly uncomfortable lives encumbered by pain without perhaps realizing that their pain is not only manageable but also treatable. By visiting a qualified and specialized chiropractor in Colorado Springs, many would not have to suffer this kind of pain.

How can chiropractors help?

Because of the kind of conditioning and messages we see daily, most people believe that chiropractors are specialists who only deal with back and neck pains. The truth of the matter is that the best chiropractors in Colorado Springs deal with a lot more than just neck and back pain. Fully trained and licensed chiropractors strive to restore and optimize human health.

While honestly, this often involves a lot of pain management to help patients achieve the best health, chiropractic treatment goes beyond just pain management. Adjustments to the body, beyond just the neck and back, helps the body to function better. In a nutshell, the best chiropractic adjustments give patients an opportunity to live a full life without pain, without hampered movements and with a full range of motion. Using a set of highly specialized skills, chiropractors:

  • Check for any type of misalignment in the patient’s skeletal structure.
  • Treat any fixations or abnormalities of movement, often referred to as vertebral subluxations.
  • Apply a gentle, corrective force to the affected area to bring the patient back to optimal health.
  • Advise the patient on how to prevent further or future injuries.
  • Rehabilitate and guide the patient back towards a pain-free existence.

The difference between a chiropractor and a medical doctor

While both chiropractors and medical doctors seek to bring patients back to good health, there is a distinct difference in how the each approaches the subject. With medical doctors, the approach is usually all about medication and treating the symptoms. Whereas, with the best chiropractors in Colorado Springs, it is all about a holistic approach–one that includes identifying, correcting and advising the patient on how to manage and get to the source of their health issues. The best chiropractors show the patient how to live a healthier, more injury-free life while enjoying a full range of motion and better physical, mental and spiritual health.

Short-term benefits of chiropractic care

By visiting a chiropractor regularly, the patient stands to experience a wide variety of benefits, including:

  • Increased mobility and improved range of motion.
  • Pain relief for arthritic joints.
  • Decreased muscle spasms and stiffness.
  • Better balance and coordination.
  • Enhanced healing.
  • Better physical performance as well as energy and enthusiasm.
  • Headache relief.
  • Improved immune system function

With professional and expertly delivered chiropractic adjustments in Colorado Springs, patients stand a chance to lead better lives free of physical pain and less emotional distress. From regular visits and excellently administered adjustments, muscle spasms, stiffness, limited mobility and poor physical performance can be a thing of the past. It might take a little bit of time, but persistence and continued treatments have helped millions achieve better health. Life Symmetry Chiropractic is committed to helping people live a full life without pain by providing the best possible individualized chiropractic treatments.

Chiropractic Thots #2: What Can Chiropractic Help With?

Hey, Dr. Michael Schuneman here, chiropractor at Life Symmetry Chiropractic. Today’s chiropractic thot deals with a question that I hear a lot, “what can chiropractic help with?”

Most people have an idea that chiropractic can help with back pain, neck pain, headaches and things like that. Which is true. However, if you saw the first chiropractic thot video you learned that the first chiropractic patient was helped with his hearing and not pain! I want you to think about a couple of questions “what effect does reducing stress have on health?” and “what effect does strengthening the immune system have on health?”

As you’re thinking about those questions, we are going to get into a little more chiropractic history. That history deals with 1917-1918 Flu Epidemic which is one thing that helped lead to chiropractic being licensed in many states.

During 1917-1918 Flu Epidemnic it is estimated the flu was responsible for 500,000 deaths in the US alone. To put that in perspective currently that is a little less than deaths from heart disease or cancer in the US each year. Those are currently the #1 and #2 causes of death in the US.

During flu epidemic people started noticing that chiropractic patients had much better outcomes than medical patients. Here are a few stats, in Davenport, Ia where chiropractic had its start, medical doctors treated 4,953 cases with 274 deaths. That is not bad, it’s a 94.47% survival rate. However, chiropractors in Davenport saw 1,635 cases with only one death. That is a survival rate of 99.94%! Now if you are like me when you hear a statistic like that you may think, “Okay but they probably weren’t getting the bad cases of flu.” Not necessarily. In Oklahoma there were 233 flu cases that had been treated by medical doctors and given up as hopeless, that were then treated by chiropractors and all survived except 25. That is an 89.27% survival rate for a group that were given up as dead! That is amazing!

How can this be? Well, the nervous system coordinates and controls all functions in the body, including the immune system. Besides this historical evidence there have been a few studies that have shown that after a chiropractic adjustment the immune system is strengthened.

When the spine is misaligned or not moving properly, what we call a ‘spinal subluxation’ in chiropractic terms, it affects how well the nervous system functions. Spinal subluxations cause interference with the information sent through the nervous system and the body cannot function at its best because of blocked or garbled signals. Think of trying to give someone directions over a bad cell phone connection and you’ll get the idea.

So to answer what can chiropractic help with? It can help the body overall to function better and therefore I sincerely believe it can help with any health problems! Now I want to be clear, that does not mean that chiropractic is a ‘treatment’ for every disease or will solve every health problem. Chiropractic does not treat a disease or illness like medicine, but it does help the body to function better and that allows the body to heal itself.

I hope you enjoyed this video! Please hit the like button below and leave a comment of what you thought or any questions that you may have. Thanks! We’ll see you on the next thot.

5 Little-Known Health Benefits Of Using A Chiropractor In Colorado Springs

Healthy couple

Spinal manipulation for therapeutic purposes has been around for more than 2,000 years. At this point, the benefits of excellent chiropractic care have been explored by millions of people worldwide.

Individuals who use the services of a good chiropractor in Colorado Springs often end up witnessing major improvements in several aspects of their daily lives that go well beyond their initial pain management objectives. Here are five of the lesser-known benefits associated with chiropractic services that many patients experience.

1. A Stronger Immune System

Those who visit their chiropractors often report a higher level of wellness that can be correlated with a stronger immune system. They are more able to fight off a wide range of illnesses and find it easier to stay in good shape. This improvement can be linked to an increased functionality of the central nervous system, triggered and maintained through quality chiropractic care.

2. Increased Mobility

Natural long-lasting pain relief goes hand in hand with increased mobility. As people age, they become less flexible and are forced to deal with a series of age-specific concerns, such as a reduced range of motion. Chiropractic care addresses this issue by alleviating pain and allowing patients to regain their flexibility. In order to maintain these benefits, people should also start exercising on a regular basis; nonetheless, the care provided by a good chiropractor gets them started and enables them to stay on the right path toward a healthier, more flexible body at any age.

3. Improved Digestion

When the central nervous system functions well, the digestive system also works normally. When one’s spine is perfectly aligned and all the messages sent to the brain are being transported and interpreted in an ideal manner, digestion takes place rapidly and efficiently. This is precisely why chiropractic care is seen as a wonderful solution to well-being and health-related problems by people who suffer from chronic constipation or obesity. Regular chiropractic sessions are reported to also promote a healthy weight loss, allowing people to sculpt their bodies without any pain, stress, or surgery.

4. Healthier Lifestyle Choices

Good chiropractic care also motivates people to stay active and pay attention to a series of important aspects that they may have been neglecting for a long period of time, such as correct breathing techniques, meditation, or ideal posture. Improving any of those small things has a big impact on health.

5. Drug-Free, Longer-Lasting Pain Relief

These days, more and more people choose to open their medicine cabinets every single time they have to deal with pains and aches. Prescription drugs can make their lives a whole lot easier but without actually tackling the real root of the problem. Unlike medication that only manages to address a series of symptoms, chiropractic care is focused on total healing. Through gentle movements and the expert guidance provided by a skilled chiropractor, people can benefit from a longer-lasting pain relief fueled by a perfect balance between mind, body and soul.

How Can A Chiropractor In Colorado Springs Help With Sports Injuries?

football game

In Colorado, sports-related injuries are the bane of most physically active people – both the competitive ones and the hobbyists who are just seeking the delight of an endorphin rush or a friendly game with their teammates.

Fatigued muscles, sprained ankles, and even broken bones can result either from the very nature of some sports, or from overtraining and poor equipment. Suffering from one of these can be followed by weeks of inactivity, which is frustrating for the budding athlete.

Nevertheless, in almost all scenarios the health benefits of physical activity far surpass the risks involved – and these risks can be minimized by following proper warm up and cool down routines, investing in quality equipment, and other discipline-specific measures. In addition, seeing a chiropractor in Colorado Springs can provide an extra protection against injury.

The First Job Is Always Prevention

Have you heard the saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? It is always easier and cheaper to prevent an accident than to repair it – and this applies to sports injuries as well. Just like warm-ups and stretching are meant to prevent muscle damage while exercising, the first chance a chiropractor has to help an athlete deals with preventing injury.

A lot of serious injuries result from pre-existing back, ankle, knee, or hip misalignments or muscle imbalances – often minimal enough that they go unnoticed until something happens. A full evaluation with a chiropractor in Colorado Springs before beginning a new exercise program will help identify and deal with these lurking dangers and help prevent more serious injury.

Maintenance is Good for Bodies as Well as Vehicles

Usually, it is trauma injuries – broken bones and torn ligaments – that are the ones that get all the attention. However, many amateur athletes often end up missing more workouts because of chronic injuries, such as sore muscles, overexertion syndrome, and back or neck problems. These are particularly common among endurance sports, and are often seen in joggers, swimmers, and cyclists.

A regular routine of chiropractic care helping keep the back and other joints in alignment can be fundamental in preventing normal muscle exertion from growing into a chronic injury. People who are training for a competitive milestone or are beginning to get serious about a sport – for example, those seeking to run their first 5K – might also find this helps improve their performance.

Once The Injury Has Happened, Rehabilitation is Possible

Sometimes, even the most safety-conscious athlete will find themselves suffering a serious trauma injury. Here in Colorado, it is not uncommon to hear of ski trips or mountain treks that end up in the E.R., and are followed by several weeks of forced rest – even after the cast or bandages are off.

Chiropractors play a fundamental role in getting these athletes back to the field. Physical rehabilitation is often the key aspect that will determine if healing will be complete, as well as help reduce the time frame for it.

Finding a chiropractor in Colorado Springs can help you prevent injury, maintain physical form, and – should it be necessary – help in post-injury rehabilitation. It will be an excellent guarantee to avoid missing the entire season.

June Is Men’s Health Month

Mens health

Did you know? Men’s Health Month occurs during the month of June to spread awareness about proper men’s health and nutrition. The month is dedicated to get attention for men who need to improve their lifestyle habits towards better health year-round. Summer is the ideal time for many men to start eating and exercising better. In addition, they also need to get regular checkups and see their healthcare professionals about their health status.

Yearly Exams

Men need to get their teeth and bodies checked out by their dentist and doctor every year to identify potential problems before they become serious. A doctor or dentist will often catch small problems, like weight gain, blood pressure, blood sugar, small cavities and potential gum issues, helping their patients address the problems before they need expensive and extensive procedures. Yearly exams are important. But there is more men can do to help improve their health or maintain the good health they already enjoy.

Healthy Upkeep

Chiropractic treatment in Colorado Springs is helpful for men who want to help their bodies stay flexible and healthy throughout the year. Just like a dentist and doctor can catch problems early before they become worse, a chiropractor can catch and correct little misalignments of the spine that can lead to pain and more health problems in the future. The chiropractor isn’t the one who does the healing but rather enables a patient’s body to heal on its own with adjustments, massage and other therapies. Chiropractic care is based on the truth that the body heals itself, but is often inhibited by inflammation, misalignment and poor circulation of blood to damaged tissues. Chiropractors not only see injured patients, but also those who are not experiencing pain, but want to improve their overall lifestyle.

Eating Better

Reducing inflaming foods, such as excessive refined sugars and highly processed and low nutrient foods is important for helping the body operate at its optimum level. Men often could benefit from cutting out fried foods and sugary drinks that often contribute to an overeating problem. Adding healthy proteins and nutrients with lean meat (fish and chicken), healthy fats and proteins (eggs, tree nuts and avocados), and natural vitamins (dark greens and colorful vegetables) will help reduce the desire for unhealthy foods. Drinking plenty of water (studies recommend at least 13 cups of water per day for men) is also important for men to maintain healthier bodies and improve their body function.

Moving

Exercise doesn’t have to be a dedicated time in the gym. Men need to find an activity that gets their heart pumping and muscles working at least a few times a week. Exercise can come in the form of walking a dog, playing a recreational sport, Frisbee golf, swimming, chasing kids in a game of tag and more. Not only does exercise help the body, but it also reduces stress levels and improves overall mood for most men.

Although the majority of men don’t like going to the doctor for checkups, and many don’t like to eat well and exercise too, it is still important! So please consider your health habits and use this month as a reminder to do a little better!

Signs And Treatments For Whiplash

Whiplash refers to a painful injury of the tendons and ligaments of the neck. It is often due to a sudden jolting of that part of the body. It accounts for over three-fourths of injury claims following auto accidents. The following are some signs of whiplash, along with treatments that can help with pain reduction and recovery.

Pain In Just About Every Direction – But Sometimes Not at First

A whiplash injury causes pain when the neck is moved in just about any direction – front, backward and side to side or any combination thereof. However, the pain of whiplash may not be immediately felt right following the accident. Sometimes it can take a day or two for this type of pain to manifest, or occasionally even longer. The pain may come on gradually or suddenly and then get worse as time passes.

Whiplash Symptoms

Other symptoms of a case of whiplash include neck stiffness, tenderness, pain, constricted movement and minor to severe headaches. Interestingly, women seem to be more likely than men to experience whiplash after an accident. While traffic accidents are the main cause, other possibilities like a hit to the head, slipping and falling, or trauma experienced while playing a sport can also result in whiplash. Any movement that causes a sudden jolt can potentially cause a case of whiplash.

A list of many whiplash symptoms is as follows:

  • Neck pain
  • Neck stiffness
  • Upper back/shoulder pain or stiffness
  • Numbness/pain in arms or hands
  • Headaches
  • Lower back pain
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Dizziness
  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory loss
  • Irritability
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances/insomnia

Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash consists of injuries to the soft tissues like neck muscles and ligaments as well as the disks in the spine. These injuries cannot be seen with a standard X-ray and are most often diagnosed by considering the signs, symptoms and circumstances that led to the injury. Tests like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT scans can assist with diagnosis, but are not typically used unless a more serious spinal injury is a possibility.

Treating Whiplash

Using ice packs on the neck followed by a heating pad or warm bath can assist in reducing swelling and pain, and a pain reliever (over the counter, prescription or even a natural or herbal remedy) can reduce discomfort. A multifaceted approach utilizing massage, physical therapy and chiropractic treatment in Colorado Springs offers the best healing and can also help profoundly in reducing discomfort. Recovery time will depend upon the severity of the case of whiplash.

Chiropractic Care Can Offer Relief When Nothing Else Works

Unfortunately, often people will suffer for years after injuring their backs. Traditional doctors, though they can work wonders with some issues, really don’t do well dealing with back problems most of the time.

Traditional doctors’ typical first line of treatment, prescription drugs, either can’t fully eliminate the pain or they’re so strong they practically knock you out, and they can be addictive. Surgery, medicine’s other mainstay, is tricky when done on the back thanks to the fact that the spinal cord runs through the middle of the problem area. Fusing vertebrae together can stop pain that is related to back motion, but at the cost of loss of mobility in the back. Other types of back surgery are typically riskier and less likely to produce effective results. Unfortunately often surgery does not give lasting relief and really should be considered after conservative treatment has been unsuccessful.

These problems leave patients with suboptimal healing and plenty of frustration. Fortunately, there is an answer: Chiropractic care. As a chiropractor in Colorado Springs I take a different approach than the average back doctor. I don’t prescribe any drugs for patients and I don’t do surgery either. Instead, I work to adjust the vertebrae (bones of the spine) so that the patient can move without aggravating the injured area. This provides fast relief, and on top of that, it gives the injury a better chance of healing.

What if Pain is Coming from Somewhere Other than the Back?

In a large number of cases, the root problem of stubborn pain is the back – even if the pain is felt in a place that seems to have nothing to do with it. The neck involves the upper spine and is often treated by chiropractic care, but leg and foot problems can also arise when spinal nerves are irritated. Arm and hand problems, while rarer, may also occur. This happens because the body reports the pain as coming from the part that the nerves go to instead of the location where the irritation is actually happening.

Of course, not all limb problems are actually back problems. Proper diagnosis is essential for obtaining relief. Some things that point to underlying back problems are a lack of effectiveness of treatments aimed at the painful part, known back issues or co-existing back pain, altered posture, tingling in the problematic area, and a lack of known injury to distant painful parts. A good chiropractor will be sure to get the patient’s injury history as well as any existing medical reports to help be sure of where a problem actually lies.

Once it is determined that a back problem is at fault, treatment begins. For most people, relief will soon follow.

Is It Bad To Pop My Own Back Or Neck?

This is a question that I sometimes get from patients or other people when they find out I am a chiropractor. Often it goes something like this, “I know I shouldn’t but it feels so good to pop my neck (or back) and I do it all the time. Is that bad for my neck(or back)?” People seem to think it is a bad thing to be popping their back or neck all the time. Today I wanted to answer that question and give you some of the reasoning behind it.

The short answer to the question “Is it bad to pop my own back or neck?” is it depends. The reason I say that is because there are many different ways that the back or neck can pop. But first let’s talk about what that pop is.

The prevailing thought is that the popping noise you hear when ‘cracking’ or ‘popping’ your knuckles, or any other joint for that matter, is the sound of gas bubbles being released from the fluid within the joint. Much like when you open a can of soda the gas that was dissolved in the liquid is released because the change in pressure. Likewise there is gas that is dissolved in the liquid that lubricates the joints of the body. When you change the pressure within the joint by stretching or moving the joint, some of that gas is released. The gas will eventually be reabsorbed into the fluid within the joint. This process in and of itself does not cause any damage to the joint.

When It Is Okay

So if the ‘pop’ or ‘crack’ is simply gas being released and does not cause problems, why would popping your own back or neck be bad? Well as I said before it depends on how you are popping your back or neck. Often when people are doing a gentle stretch of the back or neck they will get pops and that is okay. I really wouldn’t worry about this because this movement is within the normal motion of the joint. And to be honest it may actually help correct minor misalignments or restrictions because the body is always trying to correct itself.

Now just to help you understand, regularly popping your back and neck in this way does not mean you don’t need to go to the chiropractor. What I do is much more specific and precise to help restore proper motion and function to the spine than a good general stretch . Besides, the joints of the spine that are moving well enough to allow them to pop are probably not the ones that really need to be adjusted. While those that really need to be adjusted are unlikely to release with this type of motion.

When It Is Bad

So if a general stretch is okay, when is popping your back or neck a bad thing? Sometimes individuals will use a quick jerking motion to get the neck or back to pop. This can be a bad thing. One of the reasons being that it can become a habit and they end up doing it repeatedly, often several times a day or even several times an hour. This is a problem because the repeated motion with that quick jerk or pull can stretch the ligaments surrounding the joints and, over time, lead to injury or even laxity of those joints. This can lead to some instability or excessive motion at those joints and set the stage for likely further injury.

I know that some of you out there reading this might be in this second category and think, ‘well a general stretch won’t get it to pop and that pop feels good and relieves the tension or pain for a little bit’. It is true that the pop (which is called a cavitation) does feel good and for a very short time can lead to pain relief. But my advice to you is to leave the adjusting to the expert, the chiropractor. You will be better off and will likely experience long term relief from regular chiropractic care.

Let me know what you thought of the post and share your most interesting story of who you know who likes to pop their back or neck. If there is someone that you think needs to read this pass it along. And if you would like help with your back or neck pain and are in the Colorado Springs area stop on by, I would love to help.

Should I See A Chiropractor After A Car Accident?

car crash

You are sitting at the stop light waiting for the light to change. If you are like many people, you may even take that time to quick check your phone. You hear the screech of tires a split second before you feel the impact. Luckily, it wasn’t that bad of an accident. Your bumper is a little banged and dented but you feel okay.

A few days later you notice that your neck feels stiff and a little sore. You take some pain relievers and go on your way. You may even think that maybe you should have it checked out. But who would you go to? And how long would it take? So you wait and see and in a week or two you are feeling ‘better’ so you put it out of your mind.

I don’t know if this situation sounds familiar to you or not. But as a chiropractor in Colorado Springs I have heard similar stories recounted to me many times. Often I hear about this months or even years later when someone is in my office with back and/or neck pain.

In this post I wanted to give you some of the reasons that I think after any kind of car accident you should get checked by a chiropractor, even if it was a low-speed accident.

First, let’s talk about low-speed collisions. It makes sense that in a low-speed collision you are less likely to get hurt than a high-speed collision. However injuries or even death can occur in a low-speed car accident.

In a report from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in the year 1999 alone there were over 500 fatalities and over 50,000 injuries from low-speed crashes. A low-speed crash being defined as no vehicle traveling over 10 mph and not involving bicycles or pedestrians.

I mention this information because you can be injured even in a low-speed accident. In fact, it is not uncommon to be injured in a low-speed crash. The question that remains is how extensive is the injury?

Going back to the story at the beginning, often people know there is some injury but think it isn’t that ‘bad’ because the pain wasn’t intense or didn’t last very long. I can tell you that even if the pain goes away quickly there can be injuries that change the way you move and, in turn, can have significant consequences months to years down the road!

Now the reason you should see a chiropractor after a car accident even if you were checked out in the emergency room or by another doctor is because chiropractors are looking for different injuries. In the emergency room or at the doctor’s office they are mostly looking for life-threatening and debilitating injuries. As a chiropractor, I am looking for much more subtle changes in the movement of the spine and muscle tone that can affect how you function in day to day life and that could lead to problems in the future.

I often see patients who were injured years ago and that injury has contributed to their current pain and stiffness. Because when you change how a joint moves it changes the stress on the joint as well. Also specifically with the spine, when the bones of the spine are not moving properly or are misaligned it can put extra stress on the nerves. This leads to the body not being able to function as well as it could and hinder healing, even if there isn’t pain.

So yes, I recommend that everyone that is in any kind of car accident should be checked by a chiropractor. If there isn’t any injury affecting the movement and alignment of the spine, that is great! But seeing a chiropractor would be the only way to know since chiropractors are one of the only doctors that are even looking for it.

If you would like to know more and are in the Colorado Springs area feel free to contact our office. If you are other areas talk to a chiropractor near you.

How A Chiropractor Can Help TMJ

Jaw pain, TMJ

People who suffer from jaw pain from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or commonly referred to as TMJ (also known as TMD) may think to see a dentist or oral surgeon to relieve their pain. However, a chiropractor can truly provide lasting pain relief for this condition so sufferers do not suffer in chronic pain.

TMJ Causes

TMJ can have many different causes, including:

  • Dislocated jaw
  • Displaced disc in the jaw
  • Degenerative joint disease, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Jaw injury
  • Pain in the neck, shoulders, or jaw muscles
  • Underlying stress
  • Tooth or jaw grinding or clenching

One or more of these causes may contribute to jaw problems. Until the underlying cause is identified and addressed, people who suffer from TMJ will continue to experience chronic jaw pain.

How Chiropractors Can Help

Signs that someone has TMJ include limited range of motion in the jaw, altered motion of the jaw, pain in the jaw, clicking noises when the jaw opens or closes, headaches, or earaches and hearing problems. A chiropractor in Colorado Springs can perform diagnostic tests to confirm whether the individual suffers from TMJ. If the chiropractor finds that TMJ is present, then he or she can begin a series of treatments designed to alleviate the underlying cause.

Heat and ice can soothe tight muscles and decrease any local inflammation and relieve pain associated with TMJ. A chiropractor can also perform gentle jaw massage that will loosen up tight tissue and help the muscles in the jaw relax. This can also alleviate pain and help increase the range of motion.

Chiropractors will perform gentle adjustments using their hands or special tools to realign displaced joints and discs within the neck, spine, and jaw. As these come into proper alignment, the jaw will be able to return to its regular range of motion. Patients often report that they no longer feel pain and irritation in the jaw, can open their jaw more than in the past, and feel better.

Chiropractors can also recommend additional treatment, demonstrate stretching and strengthening exercises that will reduce the likelihood of TMJ recurring, and make other recommendations to improve patient health and wellness.

Treatment for TMJ can restore a patient’s daily quality of life and help alleviate chronic pain associated with inflammation, degenerative joint disease, and misalignment of the jaw. Full treatment for TMJ will usually take several sessions with a chiropractor; however many patient report feeling some relief from their symptoms even after just one treatment!
